On Sunday, February 1, the Democratic Party won the special election for the Texas Senate in District 9, a district they hadn’t won since 1991. Candidate Taylor Rehmet, a former Air Force veteran and union leader, defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss by a 14-point margin.

This result represents a significant shift in voting trends, considering that in the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump won that same district by a 17-point margin.

The Republican defeat comes amid social and economic tensions. Discontent over the operational tactics of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following incidents such as the murder of nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and the violent arrest of a minor in Texas on his way home from school, along with other concerns, have damaged the image of the ruling party.

Recently, audio recordings of a phone conversation were leaked in which Republican Senator Ted Cruz warned Trump that continued tariffs and violent ICE raids would lead to the loss of the House of Representatives and the Senate, “and they will spend the next two years facing impeachment proceedings every week.”

This marks the sixth consecutive electoral defeat for candidates backed by the White House occupant, adding to the losses in the mayoral races in Miami (which saw a change of leadership for the first time in 30 years) and New York, as well as in the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey. Democrats also won special elections in Iowa and Kentucky.

Regarding campaign financing, the disparity in funds did not prevent the Democratic victory: candidate Leigh Wambsganss had an investment of $2.4 million, compared to the $200,000 used by Rehmet, who based his strategy on defending public education and job security.

The vacancy in the state Senate arose after the resignation of Republican Kelly Hancock, who left the seat after four terms to take a position in the state government. Donald Trump became involved in the race, using his digital platforms to endorse Wambsganss, whom he described as a key advocate of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement in the region.

With this victory, the Democrats secure a strategic position heading into the midterm elections in November of this year, while the Republican sector faces internal warnings about the potential loss of control of Congress if the current trend of disapproval continues.
